T H E B O O K O F G O O D F O R T U N E S Eating a lot of Chinese food, and desperately needing a break from the intensity of screenwriting, I started a sketchbook, which became a sort of visual diary, and titled it The Book of Good Fortunes. It was the spring of 1986. I was a graduate film student at Columbia University, New York. New York is the ultimate experience in jaded, harsh reality, and, as worldly as I thought I was, I was still a child. And, in fact, being a childdoing these wacky collagesallowed me to keep what semblance of sanity I had. When the size of my sketchbooks became a limitation, I visited Pearl Paint on Canal Street, bought some larger sheets of paper, and continued to play and developed my next series called Killing Time. Meanwhile, I developed cinematic ideas for films, videos, and screenplays, and have only recently realized that my collage efforts are in fact an extension of my film sensibilities: long shot; medium shot; and closeup. | ![]() © 19861992 Steven P.
